Our client is looking to employ a Project Manager for minimum 12 months on a biogas/waste-to-energy project in Cape Town.

They are looking for an experienced Project Manager with a proven track record that can lead a complex, multi-discipline project with tight deadlines and chunk it down into manageable tasks. Essential attributes are the ability to maintain focus, a solution-orientated attitude and being accurate and specific. well-rounded understanding of industrial wastewater design-build & commission type projects, as well as a good working knowledge of FIDIC based contracts will be advantageous.

The appointment would be a fixed-term non-permanent appointment with the intention for a permanent position.

General overview

The candidate must demonstrate a well-rounded knowledge of the principles of Project Management and must be conversant and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the knowledge areas as defined by the PMI (PMBok standards).  Practical implementation of said principles into delivering results whilst building lasting relationships with your team and customers is key.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in industrial water/waste recycling related projects.

Leadership structure:

 Projects are guided and directed by the project sponsors and led, executed and driven by the project managers. The project manager, under the guidance and direction of the project sponsor, is responsible for execution of the project including design, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, planning, structuring, and people resourcing the project to ensure its success.

On site is a full time Project Engineer, Site Manager and Safety Officer who will be led by the Project Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Owning the responsibility of leading the project successfully from Appointment to Close-out throughout all the Process Groups & Knowledge areas required to satisfy the specifications of the contract.  (Safely, on-time, to standard, no waste with joy)

  • Staffing the Project (building a team)

  • Stakeholder & Communication management

  • Site & Sub-contractor management & other site related activities
  • Development & delivering of key reports both internal & external.
  • Commissioning Management
  • Taking Over of Works management

Outcomes of responsibilities as examples:

  • Pro-active contract and commercial management, notifications, claims, variations, etc.
  • Project Control Leader, managing the Controls of Cost, Resources, Procurement, Quality, planning of detail activities.
  • Progress report and risk report.
  • Manage the Health and safety monthly report submission.
  • Manage project quality report meetings.
  • Pro-active project planning, execution and leadership so that the entire team is clear on specifically what tasks must be when to achieve a future outcome.
  • Submissions of request for:
    • Quotations
    • Information
  • Manage the Employer relationship and boundaries.
  • Lead daily, weekly and monthly progress meetings as required.
  • Lead the value engineering sessions as necessary to reduce cost.
  • Submitting monthly interim payment claims and invoicing.
  • Submit monthly cost reports.
  • Manage cash flow.
  • Pro-active procurement scheduling.
    • Orders initiation.
  • Manage and appoint sub-contractors.
    • Draft SLA contracts with sub-contractors
    • Approve sub-contractors progress claims.
  • Lead site personnel.
  • Manage sub-contractors & labour relations.
  • Establish and oversee project close out documentation and processes through to completion.
  • Negotiate, resolve and close out any outstanding change orders, quality issues or disputes.
  • Process and track any final invoices, payment applications, retention payments, etc.
  • Prepare and submit final project accounting and budget.

Required Skills:

  • Disciplined, pro-active planning and executing by chunking down project goals into manageable tasks.

  • Proven track record in delivering effective programs/projects.

  • Passionate about solving complex challenges within aggressive timelines.
  • Proficient in MSOutlook, MSWord, MSExcel, MSProjects, Mind Manager, Adobe and ACAD.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related engineering degree, construction management, or related field; advanced degree or professional certification (ECSA & PMP) preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of project management methodologies (PMBOK), tools, and techniques with a focus on implementation of theory into practice and results.
  • Project Management Professional course or certification. (PMP or CAPM)
  • Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines.

Recommended Experience:  

  • Min 10 years’ experience in large scale EPC projects as a project manager.
  • Proven Track Record of successfully delivering complex projects on time, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations, standards, and best practices in the EPC industry in South Africa
